The New Nike commercial is getting a lot of attention. I sat back this morning and watched it, thinking about the 'Just Do It's of the past and trying to keep an open mind.
I was very unsettled after finishing the commercial. For those of you who haven't seen it, I share a few lines.
Don't try to be the fastest runner in your school, or in the world. Be the fastest runner ever.
Don't settle for Homecoming queen or linebacker, do both.
Lose 120 pounds and become an ironman after beating a brain tumor.
Don't believe you have to be like anybody to be a somebody
In other words...it's not about you doing your best, it only matters if you are the best of the best!
There are amazing chefs cooking dinner for their families every night, never in a restaurant for a paycheck. They should get recognized! Whether you take 1st in the Boston Marathon or last; you ran the freakin' Boston Marathon...Good job! You lost 150 pounds..AMAZING. You beat cancer; you rock! You ran an Ironman...Holy Cow! All three amazing in their own right. Nope, not enough for Nike unless you did all 3.
I do not like this message at all!
I grew up with parents who taught me that I could do anything I wanted; be anything I wanted and conquer the world however I chose. However, they also helped me believe that no matter how good I was, there would always be someone better. BUT, if I had done my very best, then I should feel proud!
Sorry NIKE....You missed it!
So true!!
